Born April 12, 1937, I am a Native American leader, teacher, lecturer, activist and author. I am also known as Nowa Cumig, meaning "In the Center of the Ground". In 1968, I co-founded the American Indian Movement (AIM). It was established to protect the Indian peoples traditional way of life and engage in legal cases protecting legal rights of Natives, like hunting, fishing, trapping, and wild rice farming. In 1972, I assisted in the organization of AIM's "Trail of Broken Treaties", a caravan travelled across the US to Washington to meet with the US Congress leaders about related issues. However, government officials would not meet with the group. I also had a great deal to do with the movement on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1973, which was led against the corrupt Richard Wilson. My AIM activitity led to the armed takeover of Wounded Knee. Homes and businesses were destroyed. AIM protested under my leadership in Custer, Sourh Dakota in 1973, reducing the sentence of a white's murdering to that of a Native Americans.
